About the D4 (Tetrahedron)
The D4 is the smallest of the traditional polyhedral dice sets. Shaped as a 3-dimensional tetrahedron with four equilateral triangular faces, it is frequently used for light weapon damage, small healing increments, and minor bonus checks in tabletop games.
Geometric Properties
Regular tetrahedron with 4 triangular faces, 4 vertices, and 6 edges. Because a tetrahedron rests with a flat face down and a vertex pointing up, physical D4s display the outcome either at the top apex or along the bottom edge.
Common Tabletop & Gaming Uses
- • Dagger and dart damage in tabletop RPGs
- • Healing potion increments (e.g. 2d4 + 2 for potion of healing)
- • Spells like Magic Missile (1d4 + 1 per dart) and Guidance (adds 1d4 to ability checks)
- • Turn order tie-breakers and small randomized tables
D4 Probability Basics
A single D4 has a uniform discrete distribution where each face from 1 to 4 has exactly a 25% chance of rolling.
| Face Value | Theoretical Odds | Exact Percentage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1/4 | 25.00% |
| 2 | 1/4 | 25.00% |
| 3 | 1/4 | 25.00% |
